Session Description:

Join this parent workshop on effective communication strategies and gain invaluable insights and practical communication strategies for addressing bullying with their children. Facilitated by experts in anti-bullying advocacy, participants will explore age-appropriate approaches to discussing bullying, fostering open dialogues, and empowering their children to navigate challenging social situations. Through engaging activities and real-life scenarios, parents will leave equipped with the tools to create a supportive environment at home, reinforcing resilience and empathy in their children.

Speaker Bio:

Jordan Mix (they/them) serves as the Director of Educational Programming at Iowa Safe Schools, leveraging their expertise to create inclusive learning environments. A 2016 graduate of Drake University with degrees in Law, Politics, and Society; Sociology; and Women and Gender Studies, Jordan's journey began with transformative leadership as the president of Rainbow Union. Their commitment to inclusivity extended to pioneering efforts, including the establishment of the first all-gender bathroom on campus and contributing significantly to Drake’s Transgender Inclusion Statement.

 

Furthering their education, Jordan completed graduate studies in Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. In 2019, Jordan assumed the role of head curator for the groundbreaking project "Breathe, Learn, Act," crafting the first virtual care package for parents of transgender and non-binary kids.

 

Since joining Iowa Safe Schools in March 2020, Jordan has been a driving force in developing LGBTQ+-inclusive curriculum for K-12 educators, leading an online academy, and conducting impactful training sessions for students, educators, and the broader community. When they’re not working, Jordan finds joy in hiking with their wife, cheering on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team with their cat, and honing their home barista skills.
