Partners in Learning: Understanding Services for Students with Visual Impairments in Iowa

Families, caregivers, and educators play a vital role in supporting students who are blind or visually impaired. Join Dr. Susan Brennan from Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) for a webinar that explores how students with visual impairments and blindness across Iowa receive specialized services and supports. Participants will gain a clear understanding of IESBVI’s role, including how students are identified, assessed, and provided with direct instruction and resources to support learning and independence.

This session will also focus on Accessible Educational Materials (AEM), explaining what they are, why they matter, and how they remove barriers to learning for students with visual impairments. Attendees will leave with a stronger understanding of the statewide system of support, practical knowledge to advocate for appropriate services, and increased confidence in partnering with schools and service providers to ensure students can fully access their education.

Participants will:

1. Learn what the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) does and how it supports students.
2. Understand how students who are blind or visually impaired receive services throughout Iowa, from assessment to direct support.
3. Explore what Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) are and how they help students access learning.
